WHAT IS OPTOELEKTRONICS
One possible definition for optical engineering is the development and production of optical systems (e.g. lasers, microscopes, smartphone cameras, VR glasses, etc.). The engineer from the field of optoelectronics has a deeper understanding of three areas of competence:
The first field of competence is optoelectronics (sometimes also called optronics or optoelectronics ). In addition to the individual optical and electronic components of a system, the engineer also masters the interface between electrical and optical components.
The second field of competence is computer science or optoinformatics. This includes the so-called optic design, i.e. the simulation on the PC of how light propagates in an optical system (e.g. how does the image from the smartphone get into my eye via the data glasses). This also includes the development of algorithms and software for image processing (machine vision), with the help of which information can be obtained from an image (e.g. the distance to a car in front in an autonomous vehicle).
The third field of competence is optomechanics or mechatronics. This is understood to mean the interdisciplinary interaction of optics with mechanics, or electronics and computer science. An example of this would be the autofocus system of a camera: the initially blurred image is recorded and evaluated using algorithms. The objective lenses are electrically readjusted using appropriate mechatronic actuators until a sharp image can ultimately be recorded.
